sensory garden 1

“A garden to walk in and an immensity to dream in”  Victor Hugo, Les Misérables, 1862

The Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice is a charity with whom I have been volunteering since it’s inception 15 years ago. Their beautiful sensory garden was designed as a stimulating and safe space where children can play and learn through connecting with nature and exploring their senses and emotional responses toward it.

Sadly, during the lockdown in Spring 2020 the hospice had to close it’s doors to their day care facilities. Although the Alexander nurses continued their wonderful work supporting the families and chilren in their homes, the children were unable to visit and enjoy the garden.

When the Covid 19 restrictions were lifted I began a photography project to create a series of images reflecting the fragile and ever changing elements of nature within the garden. The images are created using multiple exposures and intentional camera movement techniques capturing colours, textures and forms and conveying the emotional, physical and spiritual levels on which the children can connect with the different elements.

The collection has been created as part of a fundraising initiative with 100% of the profits going to the charity.

Printed on archival fine art paper and mounted, the photographs are available to purchase as signed limited edition prints.

Please also see ‘sensory garden 2’ for the collection of cyanotypes created in parallel as part of the fundraising project.
